IPA
IPA refers to the International Phonetic Alphabet, the basic principle of which is using one letter selected from major European languages to represent one speech sound. It came into being at the end of the 19th centuray when articulatory phonetics had developed to such an extent in the West that scholars began to feel the need for a standardized and internationally accepted system of phonetic transcription.
