Needless to say, under this “tough” surface lies profound love, hence there is the phrase “tough love.”It is a case of oxymoron (矛盾修辞法), which is a rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined.“Tough love” refers to Anne’s belief that you should be a bit tough with your loved ones in order to get them back to normal life as quickly as possible.
