According to Austin, what are the three acts a person is possibly performing while making an utterance? Give examples to illustrate them.
  • A speaker might be performing three acts simultaneously when speaking: locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. e.g. when making the utterance 'The coffee is not sugared.', the locutionary act the speaker performs is the unttering of all the words in the sentence, 'the, coffee, is, not, sugared'; the illocutionary act he probably performs in a certain context could be asking the listerner to pass him the sugar; if the listener recognises his intention and does pass him the sugar and the speaker sweetens his coffee with the sugar, the perlocutionary act is successfully performed.
