    OneinfiveAmericanadultsexperiencedamentalhealthissue Onein10youngpeopleexperiencedaperiodofmajordepression Onein25Americanslivedwithaseriousmentalillness,suchasschizophrenia,bipolardisorder,ormajordepression Suicideisthe10thleadingcauseofdeathintheUnitedStates.Itaccountsforthelossofmorethan41,000Americanliveseachyear,morethandoublethenumberofliveslosttohomicide. 2)Fact:Evenveryyoungchildrenmayshowearlywarningsignsofmentalhealthconcerns.Thesementalhealthproblemsareoftenclinicallydiagnosable,andcanbeaproductoftheinteractionofbiological,psychological,andsocialfactors. Halfofallmentalhealthdisordersshowfirstsignsbeforeapersonturns14yearsold,andthreequartersofmentalhealthdisordersbeginbeforeage24. Peoplewithmentalhealthproblemscangetbetterandmanyrecovercompletely. 6)Fact:Studiesshowthatpeoplewithmentalhealthproblemsgetbetterandmanyrecovercompletely.Recoveryreferstotheprocessinwhichpeopleareabletolive,work,learn,andparticipatefullyintheircommunities.Therearemoretreatments,services,andcommunitysupportsystemsthaneverbefore,andtheywork. 7)Fact:Treatmentformentalhealthproblemsvariesdependingontheindividualandcouldincludemedication,therapy,orboth.Manyindividualsworkwithasupportsystemduringthehealingandrecoveryprocess. 8)Fact:Friendsandlovedonescanmakeabigdifference.Only44%ofadultswithdiagnosablementalhealthproblemsandlessthan20%ofchildrenandadolescentsreceiveneededtreatment.Friendsandfamilycanbeimportantinfluencestohelpsomeonegetthetreatmentandservicestheyneedby:reachingoutandlettingthemknowyouareavailabletohelp;helpingthemaccessmentalhealthservices;learningandsharingthefactsaboutmentalhealth,especiallyifyouhearsomethingthatisn'ttrue;treatingthemwithrespect;refusingtodefinethembytheirdiagnosisorusinglabelssuchas'crazy' 9)Fact:Preventionofmental,emotional,andbehavioraldisordersfocusesonaddressingknownriskfactorssuchasexposuretotraumathatcanaffectthechancesthatchildren,youth,andyoungadultswilldevelopmentalhealthproblems.
